Sharon Maddix

My husband Terry and I retired to Tennessee from Michigan in 1997.
The schools where I received my education did not include art in their
curricula. Before we moved here I worked at Crittenton Hospital in
Rochester Michigan as a clerk. In my spare time I enjoyed knitting,
crochet, quilting, floral arrangement, baking and raising two children.
I took a few classes on drawing and sketching.
After we moved to Tennessee, I started taking Oil Painting Classess
in 2000 at Walter State Community College. I loved it so much I
advanced to design, print, ceramics, sculpture and Art History. While
taking classes my paintings and ceramics and sculptures were on display
in "The Gallery", the Student book that was printed every year. Many of
my paintings and ceramics and sculptures were on display every summer in
the Walter State Library in Morristown.
I met Ann of Joppa Mountain Pottery in Rutledge in 2004. She
allowed me to apprentice at Joppa Mountain Pottery. I am still working
there one day a week. We are presently working on tiles for the
Appalachian Quilt Train for which we had to be liscensed. After joining
Local Artists Gallery in 2006 Debbie Beal offered to let me create some
of my pottery in her studio in Rogersville.
Many of my paintings and pottery sculptures have won 2nd 3rd and
honorable mention in various art competitions. Two chicken planters and
two small duck sculptures were included with Joppa Mountain Pottery in
the Tomato Festival Art Competition and won first place. I enjoy art
simply for the joy of creating it. I hope you can enjoy my work as much
as I enjoy the pleasure of creation.
