Upcoming events: "Launching Your Creative Spirit" sponsored by the Rogersville Arts Council For the fourth year the Rogersville Arts Council is sponsoring Launching Your Creative Spirit, a series of art workshops that are free to the public All classes will be held at the Local Artist Gallery on the corner of Main St. and Church St. in Rogersville, TN. Patsy Mauk of Surgoinsville will teach beginner basketweaving which will run from Saturday, April 2 through April 30 at 10:30am. Students will complete a different basket in each class. To sign up call Patsy at 423-345-2754. Launching Your Creative Spirit is partially funded by an ABC Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. Classes will begin in February and run through May 2011. Local Artists Studio Tour Comming in the Spring of 2011……………..The Local Artists Gallery is hosting its Spring Artists’ Studio tour. The tour begins in the Gallery at 9:30AM, under the ‘pineapple’ quilt square on the Quilt Trail, with greetings from local artists Melissa Sadek and Martha Stapleton, demonstrating making lamp beads and pottery. The artist demonstrations continue in the Gallery until about 12:00N. The Gallery will be open until 5:30PM; and the individual studios are open from 10:00AM and continue until 5:00PM. There is no charge for this event; and you receive a free map for the tour. This will be a full day tour traveling North on Hwy #70, through Eidson and over the Clinch Mountain, visiting several artists studios. Studio visits will include Monica Chua Ah Huwa, Chinese brush painting; Ron Highsmith at Fullcycle Woodworks, Sue Hurley, water color; Lee Hoellman, painted gourds and gourd sculpture; and Christine Fore, pastels, acrylic and oil. Beyond this the tour takes you to Sneedville where, at the river bridge and the Clinch River Market, you can buy an awesome hamburger. From here travel the Tazewell Highway to Keith Bowman’s wood right and broom making studio. You can return the way you came, or continue on and enjoy the spectacular views from US Hwy 24E coming back to Rogersville on US Hwy 11W North. Hawkins and Hancock Counties are rich with the talents of accomplished visual artists who are natives and those who have migrated here from New York State, Ohio, California, Florida, Singapore, Holland, England, and other points around the world. Many of these creative souls came seeking a simpler kind of life close to the earth. They have built amazing homes, planted wonderful gardens, and some have found materials in the area to create incredible artwork.
